What is the cost of an eye exam?
The cost of an eye exam will vary depending on the nature of the examination. Please call our office to let us help determine what type of exam and testing may be required so we can estimate costs for you. To contact us, CLICK HERE.

Can I drive after my eye exam?
Some eye examinations require dilation, others do not. If your eye exam requires drops for dilation, you may not be able to see well enough immediately after the exam to drive. Dilation may cause light sensitivity or blurry vision. Therefore, we recommend that you have a driver after your dilated eye examination.
(Call our office if you are not certain.)

How long before I get glasses after cataract surgery?
There is an average healing time of 2-6 weeks. You may not require a prescription for glasses for distance vision following cataract surgery. When glasses are required, they are usually given two - six weeks following the surgery depending on your circumstances. A plan will be determined at your first post-operative visit.

Does Medicare pay for glasses after cataract surgery?
Medicare Part B coverage pays an allowed amount towards a pair of glasses after you have cataract surgery. Medicare requires a 20% co-pay and a deductible may apply if your deductible has not been met for the calendar year. If you select options not allowable by Medicare, then that amount is also paid by you. This is called "overage."

How soon can I drive, golf and return to normal activities after cataract surgery?
1) Usually, you are allowed to return to golf and other activities, such as gardening and minor lifting, after the first week.
2) After cataract surgery, there is a one week restriction on heavy lifting, swimming pools, and hot-tubs. Your doctor will review what other activity may be acceptable for you at your first post-operative visit following surgery.

How soon can I have cataract surgery in my other eye?
After having cataract surgery in your first eye, your doctor will determine at your first post-operative visit what the appropriate timeline is for you. Most patients are able to proceed with the second eye surgery in 1 to 3 weeks following the first eye.

How much does cataract surgery cost?
Depending on your insurance / payment coverage, normal co-pays and deductibles will apply to your plan. Please call our office directly to find out an estimate for your co-pays.

Also, if you have a commercial insurance plan, it is advised that you contact your carrier to find out if you need pre-certification, pre-authorization or a second opinion prior to any surgery. If your insurance plan is not a plan with which our doctors or Surgery Center participate, you may have additional co-pays according to your insurance's requirements.

Click on Surgery Billing to see a more extended breakdown. No matter which location is chosen, in most cases, overall out-of-pocket co-pays will be less to you if the surgery is performed at The Surgery Center.

Do cataracts grow back?
Your natural lens that became opaque and cloudy was removed at the time of cataract surgery and was replaced with an artificial lens implant. The cataract does not grow back. However, the area in your eye where the new lens implant is placed (the sack) can become cloudy one month to three years following surgery. This is called a secondary membrane or sometimes referred to as a "secondary cataract". The secondary cataract is easily opened or treated by doing a YAG laser treatment. An evaluation with the surgeon would be required to diagnose the actual membrane to make sure no other eye conditions have developed.

Do you do laser surgery?
There are many types of laser treatments for various eye conditions. Initial cataract surgery is performed with small incision surgery, not laser.

We encourage you to call our office if you have specific questions on any eye laser treatments.

As new technology is released, we research what will work best in our setting. Different types of lasers are used for: Secondary Cataract, Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retina Detachments and Glaucoma, to name a few.
